Platinum Kanazawa-Haku

I have taken information on the Platinum Kanazawa-haku from Platinum Pen USA. I have edited it heavily for clarity.

“In Kanazawa-Haku fountain pen series, we have applied ‘Momi Chirashi.’ This traditional Japanese technique has appeared folding screens or painting on fusuma (Japanese sliding doors) since ancient times. A thin, square sheet of gold leaf is torn into smaller pieces and then pasted together. These random forms of the gold leaf result in a unique pen that appears to glow.

  • #3 Fujin-Raijin “Wind God and Thunder God”

Ascending Dragon

The “Ascending Dragon” is an ancient, auspicious symbol. The pen uses the “Unryu-zu” (a folding screen with the painting of a dragon and clouds) painted by Sotatsu Tawaraya as a motif. The gold leaf reflects light and adds lively motion to the dragon on this remarkable fountain pen.

Pine Tree and Tiger

“Matsu-Tora (pine tree and tiger)” are auspicious motifs drawn in maki-e on the gold-leaf barrel with elegance and dignity. The tiger represents wealth, status, and posterity. We have selected “Rosho Mouko-zu (ferocious tiger)” drawn by Okyo Maruyama, a Japanese artist active in the Edo period, for the design. Pine trees, with evergreen foliage, are a symbol of life.

Wind God and Thunder God

“Fujin Raijin (The Wind God and the Thunder God)” is a traditional design of Japan as well as a masterpiece of Rinpa. It appears on the Kanazawa-haku body in maki-e.

Rarity and Availability

The three Kanazawa-haku editions are currently sold by Platinum Pen USA and Platinum Pen Japan. These pens are part of the special materials collection. These pens also regularly appear on Virtual Pen Show (Instagram), r/Pen_Swap, and eBay. Because they feature gold leaf and maki-e, these pens are expensive from retailers. On the resale market, they sell for closer to $250.
