Platinum x Wancher
These Platinum x Wancher editions are well documented, because Wancher keeps their sold out editions on the website (available in English).
Nyhavn
The “Nyhavn” (2016) is a demonstrator with a pinkish body and yellow cap, end cap, and section (additional photos here). Japanese Wancher (formerly Engeika), produced the pen to celebrate the Nyhavn district of Copenhagen, Denmark. The King of Denmark constructed Nyhavn from 1670-75, and the oldest house dates to 1681. Only 100pcs were produced, and the pen sold out within the first week. Ken Crooker’s blog provides some information.
The second Platinum x Engeika/Wancher collaboration is “Lantern.” The Lantern, a demonstrator consisting of a brown body with black cap, end cap, and section, appeared in 2017 with a run of 200pcs. The marketing copy describes the inspiration for this pen:
“Lanterns play a significant role in many cultures. A well known lantern festival, practiced for hundreds of years, is observed annually by the people of Japan. Known as the Bon or Obon festival, it is a both a somber and joyful time. The Japanese honor deceased relatives and spend time with living families. Lighting a lantern is necessary in Japanese culture to praying to ancestors’ spirits and honoring their lives.”
Elsewhere the pen sold as (somewhat controversially?) “Sun Moon” or “Autumn Lantern,” but all appear to be the same Engeika/Wancher “Lantern.”
Rarity and Availability
Shop collaborations with Japanese brands/stores are hard to purchase outside Japan. Both JP-Select and Izumi Pen purchase rare shop editions for resale. But if you buy from resellers, expect to pay at least $100 more than the original list price. A cheaper option is a proxy service like White Rabbit. A proxy buyer will purchase the Pen and mail it to you for a fee and shipping costs. Alternatively, set up a mail forwarding service like Blackship to purchase, and send the pen to a Japanese address. Blackship charges the buyer a percentage and forwarding costs to ship from Japan.
It was possible to purchase these pens directly from Wancher, but they sold out very quickly. The “Nyhavn” is hard to find on the used market. The “Lantern” appears on eBay a few times a year. I was able to purchase the “Nyhavn” on r/Pen_Swap. Expect to pay $350+ for the “Lantern.” Because of its rarity, the Nyhavn sells for whatever someone will pay for it.
