Char Aznable (2017)

This special fountain pen by Platinum Pen evokes Char Aznable of Mobile Suit Gundam. The pen features a deep red resin based on Char Aznable’s nickname, Red Comet. Glitter mixed into the resin creates particles that sparkle in the light. The body presents Char’s personal emblem in gold. The reverse side of the cap shows a screen-printed gold Char Aznable signature. The cap ring features Char’s rank insignia. The 14k nib displays the Zeon emblem and is available in size Fine. The pen also comes with a blotter card and black ink cartridge so you can use it immediately. The pen is accompanied by special packaging with Char Aznable’s emblem.

Unicorn Vist (2018)

This special fountain pen by Platinum Pen presents “Biester’s Royal Pen” of Mobile Suit Gundam. The pen features a pearly resin with glitter mixed into the resin that sparkles in the light. The body presents the unicorn, the personal emblem of the Biester family, in gold. The cap ring features the words “A MON SEUL DÉSIR” (My Only Wish). The 14k nib displays the Biester family crest and is available in size Fine. The pen also comes with a blotter card printed with the fresco pattern of “The Lady and the Unicorn” and black ink cartridge so you can use it immediately. The pen is accompanied by special packaging with the golden Biester consortium emblem. 

Zabi Family (2019)

This special fountain pen by Platinum Pen evokes Zabi Family of Mobile Suit Gundam. The pen features a green resin suitable for the Zabi leader. Glitter mixed into the resin creates particles that sparkle in the light. The body represents Zabi and Zion’s Army screen-printed in gold. The reverse side of the cap shows a screen-printed gold Zion logo. The cap ring features the words “SIEG ZEON” (Victory of the Zion). The 14k nib displays the Zion emblem and is available in size Fine. The pen also comes with a blotter card and black ink cartridge so you can use it immediately. The pen is accompanied by special packaging with the gold Zion emblem.

Char Aznable Red Comet (2020)

2020 saw another version of the Platinum x Bandai Char Aznable, the “Red Comet” model.

The Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Aznable “Red Comet” features a black cap and section, with red body and end cap. The body is moulded like the Nice Collection. Char’s emblem is screened on the cap and the Zeon emblem appears on the nib and cap band. It looks like a Platinum President 18k gold nib.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Golden Wind (2020)

Platinum partnered with Bandai again to produce an anime tie-in, “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind.” Celebrating Giorno Giovanna, the pen is purple in cap and body. The barrel features Gold Experience, the symbol of Giorno while the cap has the star-shaped birthmark of the Joestar Bloodline. The 14k nib features an etching of the Stand Arrow and the cap band is also decorative. This fountain pen comes in Fine only. The pen is accompanied by special packaging with the Gold Experience.

Digimon 20th Anniversary “Omegamon” (2020)

The Platinum x Bandai Digimon “Omegamon” celebrates the 20th anniversary of Digimon.

The body is pearl white resin with the image of OmegaMon. Glitter is mixed in the resin, so the body glimmers in sunlight. The body features the illustration drawn by the DIGIMON ADVENTURE designer Dr. Kenji Watanabe. On the front side is Omega Mon, and on the back side is War Grey Mon and Metal Galle Mon screened in gold. The signature of Dr. Kenji Watanabe is printed on the back of the cap. The cap band reads “DIGITAL MONSTERS.” The 14k nib is engraved with a stylized Omega Mon. This pen comes with a Fine nib only.

Godzilla 65th Anniversary (2020)

“Bandai and The Godzilla Store are both releasing the Godzilla 65th Anniversary Fountain Pen Set. The set includes the pen, four bottles of ink, a converter, and case. The pen features engraving on the writing tip as well as on the ring around the body. The four ink colors, which are mixable, are Godzilla colors (black, flame red, aqua blue, and leaf green). The Sun-Star distributed this pen, manufactured by Platinum Fountain Pen Co. It retailed for 34,980 yen.”

The nib is 14k gold, rhodium trim, and features a kaiju Godzilla etching.

Rarity and Availability

Media promotions quickly become collector’s editions, and after the pre-sales they are hard to find. Both JP-Select and Izumi Pen purchase rare editions for resale. But if you buy from resellers, expect to pay at least $100 more than the original list price.

Bandai fountain pens pop up on eBay regularly, but some editions are rarer than others. The Unicorn Vist and JoJo are the rarest of the Bandai editions. You can expect to pay $600-800 for these pens if you are lucky enough to find them. Are they worth that much? No, they sold for ¥22,000-27,000 on release. But they cost what people are willing to pay.
